Things to do

The best things to do in Lake Charles this weekend

Drive into coastal marsh, walk the Lake Charles lakefront, see regional art and history downtown, or spend a day at the casino resorts west of Prien Lake.

Full day outdoors

Choose one side of the Creole Nature Trail

Start with Adventure Point and the west side for refuge boardwalks and Gulf beaches, or take the east side toward Pintail Wildlife Drive and Rutherford Beach. Check current closures first.

Two or three hours

See galleries inside the 1911 Historic City Hall

The restored clock-tower building houses rotating exhibitions, the Black Heritage Gallery, and Gallery by the Lake. Continue outside for downtown murals and the National Register-listed Charpentier Historic District, which includes more than 400 structures.

Resort day

Choose pools and golf or a casino night

L'Auberge and Golden Nugget cluster resort dining, gaming, pools, and golf west of the lake. This is the easiest self-contained choice in bad weather.

Museums, families, and festivals

Downtown and the lakefront fill the hours between long outings.

The 1911 Historic City Hall and Charpentier Historic District suit an art-and-architecture afternoon. Port Wonder serves families, and the festival calendar can replace both with a concert, parade, or food event.

Art and local history

1911 Historic City Hall

The former city hall is now an arts and cultural center with changing galleries. The Black Heritage Gallery focuses on African American art and history in Southwest Louisiana, while Gallery by the Lake presents work by regional artists.

Families

Port Wonder on the lakefront

The Children's Museum of Southwest Louisiana uses hands-on exhibits such as the Tinker Lab and Calcasieu Pass Lighthouse Climber. The same lakefront complex includes the state wildlife agency's Nature and Science Center.

Seasonal Lake Charles

Mardi Gras, concerts, and food festivals

Parades, gumbo cookoffs, Downtown at Sundown concerts, Chuck Fest, and other dated events can become the weekend's main city experience. Use the current calendar for the actual program rather than assuming a recurring event is running.

Lakefront

Give Prien Lake Park an hour

Use the lakefront park for open lawns, picnic shade, water views, and sunset without committing to a long drive south of town.

Golf

Book golf when the resort is the trip

A tee time and pool afternoon make sense for a casino-corridor stay; travelers focused on wildlife should keep that daylight for the Creole Nature Trail instead.

Music

Check downtown music listings

Use the official events calendar and venue schedules to find current Cajun, zydeco, jazz, and other live performances downtown.
